At just 18 years old, Lhuan-dre Pretorius has taken the domestic cricket scene by storm in his rookie season. His performances were nothing short of exceptional for the Paarl Royals in SA20, earning him the title of Batter of the Tournament and a spot in the Team of the Tournament during.
A Dream Debut Season
Reflecting on his breakthrough season, Pretorius remains humble about his achievements.
"On the field, I think I did alright. If you told me before the tournament that I’d perform like this, I would have taken it with both hands," he told Sportsboom.co.za.
But beyond his on-field success, Pretorius emphasizes the invaluable lessons he’s learned from experienced players.
"It’s more about the off-field stuff and learning from the senior guys around me. I’m very happy with my performances, and now I’m ready to take on the One Day Cup."
Honoured to Be Among the Best
Making the Team of the Tournament was a surreal moment for the young left-hander.
"Being amongst the very best is a dream come true, to say the least. I’ve dreamt of this since I was a little kid. I’ve learned so much, both on and off the field, and the lessons from the SA20 will stay with me throughout my career."
The Hard Work Behind the Scenes
Pretorius’ dedication extends beyond match days. He prepared for the tournament well in advance, even making an early move to Paarl Royals.
"Not many people know this, but I actually came down early to Paarl. I met up with Mitch van Buuren, and we arrived just after Christmas, on December 27. About 10 days before we had to join the squad."
The duo wasted no time getting to work.
"Mitch and I trained every day, hitting balls and acclimatizing to the conditions. It’s a bit warmer in Paarl compared to the Highveld, so we had to adjust."
The mental aspect of the game has also been a key focus for him.
"There’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Richard Des Neves, in particular, helped me with the mental side of the game. Being young and playing in front of big crowds means there’s a lot of pressure, so having that support has been crucial."
Quinton de Kock: The Role Model
As a fellow left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, it’s no surprise that Quinton de Kock is Pretorius’ idol.
"Quinny or Quinton, I should say. Has been my role model since I started watching cricket on TV. Funny story: when he used a GM (Gunn & Moore) bat and then switched to a new one, I would get the same bat. I even wore number 12, just like him!"
"He’s been my inspiration for as long as I can remember."
The Proteas Setup: A Step Closer
Pretorius’ outstanding performances in the SA20 almost earned him a call-up to the Proteas squad for the Tri-Series in Pakistan, where they faced New Zealand and Pakistan.
"I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but I was in the touring squad for Pakistan. Fortunately or unfortunately, we went quite far in the SA20, so I didn’t end up going."
For now, he’s focused on taking things one step at a time.
"To be honest, I’m just taking it step by step. When my chance comes, I’ll grab it with both hands."
Ambitions to Represent the Proteas
Currently playing for the Titans in the One Day Cup, Pretorius remains determined to earn his place in the national side.
"I have to earn my chance in the Proteas setup. Right now, I’m focused on the One Day Cup. The 50-over format is a different beast and it feels like three formats in one."
His goal is clear: "I just want to score as many runs as I can, be as tidy as possible in the field or behind the stumps, and contribute to the team in any way I can."
As for donning the green and gold, Pretorius knows it’s only a matter of time.
"Playing for the Proteas would be a dream come true. It’s definitely my goal. But I’m in no rush, when my chance comes, I’ll be ready to take it with both hands."
