Spin Takes Centre Stage: Paul Adams on SA20’s Playoff Race and the Tournament’s Evolution
The SA20 playoffs are set after a round-robin stage dominated by spin bowling. Youngsters like Lhuandre Pretorius and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have shone, while teams like Paarl Royals and Sunrisers EC are favorites for the title. With ICC scheduling boosting the league, future expansion may be on the horizon. The road ahead for SA20 looks promising, with increasing fan support and global attention.

With the Round Robin stage concluded, the SA20 playoffs are set, and the tournament has taken an unexpected turn as spin bowling has emerged as the dominant force. Former Proteas spinner Paul Adams breaks down the key takeaways from this season’s action.
Standout Performers: Youth & Spin Shine
The SA20 has showcased both young talent and experienced campaigners, but one name stands out.
Lhuandre Pretorius (Paarl Royals) – The young batter has been sensational, delivering match-winning performances for Paarl.
“For a youngster to come in and make such a big impact is incredible. I’ve watched him at U19 level and domestically, and he has proven he belongs at the highest level.”
Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Paarl Royals) – The Afghan spinner has been a nightmare for opposition batters.
“Mujeeb has been outstanding. He’s tough to read and takes crucial wickets. Bjorn Fortuin has also played a key role for Paarl’s spin-heavy strategy.”
Marco Jansen & Richard Gleeson (Sunrisers EC) – The pace duo played a pivotal role in Sunrisers’ late-season surge.
“Sunrisers built momentum in the middle of the season, and Jansen and Gleeson have been the ones to watch.”
20 Overs of Spin: A Game-Changer?
Paarl Royals made headlines by defending 140 runs using 20 overs of spin against the Pretoria Capitals, a rare sight in South African cricket.
“They took full advantage of their home conditions. It’s surprising to see this in South Africa, but it shows how spin is always in the game," Adams told SportsBoom.com.
However, Adams warns that an over-reliance on spin might not be ideal for SA cricket’s long-term growth.
“You want a battle of all skills, including seam bowling. While spin is great, we need to see an all-round contest in our conditions.”
Favourites for the Title
With MI Cape Town already in the final, Sunrisers EC and Paarl Royals will battle for the remaining spot. Here’s a look at the contenders:
MI Cape Town – A dominant team this season, topping the table. After two disappointing seasons, they could finally lift the trophy.
Paarl Royals – Used spin masterfully to reach the playoffs. Their mix of youth and experience makes them a serious threat.
Sunrisers EC – Defending champions who have proven that once you qualify for the playoffs, anything is possible.
Adams' pick?
“I’m a Western Cape guy [laughs]. I enjoyed Paarl, and the Newlands Faithful have been brilliant. MI Cape Town look strong and are my favourites, but Sunrisers have experience in knockout games. Anything can happen.”
ICC Scheduling: A Boost for SA20
Due to ICC scheduling conflicts, South Africa will not host any home Test matches this year, breaking a long-standing tradition of the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests.
However, SA20 organizers seized the opportunity, scheduling their next season to start on Boxing Day, a move welcomed by fans.
"It's disappointing there is no Test cricket over that period, it has been the real tradition of the game. SA20 has taken advantage of that. And it is holiday time."
"We have seen families flock to the stadium and support in their numbers this season."
"For me from a world cricket point of view, South Africa to not have a home Test series over that period is not good for the game."
Future Expansion: More Teams on the Horizon?
With the SA20’s success, fans from smaller provinces such as Free State, Northern Cape, and Mpumalanga are calling for expansion.
While no changes are expected for the next three years, Adams believes expansion is inevitable.
“There’s probably a five-year plan in place for the six franchises. But if it makes financial sense, why not expand? The competition’s popularity is only growing.”
With its growing fanbase, increasing global attention, and a shift towards spin-dominated tactics, SA20 is establishing itself as one of the premier T20 leagues in world cricket.
Who will take home the title? Will MI Cape Town finally lift the trophy, or will Sunrisers EC defend their crown? The playoffs will provide the answers.
